About Twikirize Derick

I am Twikirize Derick — also written Derick Twikirize, and known online as Derick TW. I am a data practitioner and software developer based in Kampala, Uganda.

Most of my work sits between the field and the report: survey forms enumerators can actually fill, data that arrives clean, and dashboards a manager reads without asking for a walkthrough. I work with NGOs, research teams and health programmes — the organisations where a number in a report has to be defensible six months after it was produced.

What I do

Three kinds of work, usually in combination.

  • Building. XLSForm and KoboToolbox survey design, cleaning pipelines in Python, reporting packs in Power BI, and the automation that keeps them running without me.
  • Training. Hands-on sessions for teams, using their own data and their own forms, so people leave with work already done rather than notes about work they might do.
  • Teaching in the open. The free courses on this site and the videos on the channel, built around real problems with datasets you can download.

The tools

KoboToolbox, ODK and XLSForm for collection. Excel, Power Query and Python for analysis. QGIS for mapping. DHIS2 for health programme reporting. Power BI for dashboards. SQL and Git underneath most of it, and AI where it genuinely earns its place rather than because it is fashionable.

Why the site exists

The tools most teams use every day are rarely taught with real data, in the conditions people actually work in. Tutorials assume a clean file; the file is never clean. So everything here starts from the state data actually arrives in — districts spelled four ways, dates in five formats, a column where a blank means four different things — and works forward from there.
